Safety in the U.S.
What to do if a police officer stops
you while driving:
- If you see a flashing light on a police
car, put your blinker on and pull your car to the right side of the
road as soon as it is safe to do. If the right side is a hazard, you
may pull into a parking lot or to the left side of the road if you are
sure it is safe.
- Roll down your window and wait in the
car until the police officer approaches you.
- Have your driver’s license ready
in your hand along with your car registration. The
officer might also ask for your auto insurance card.
- Once the officer tells you why they pulled
you over, be courteous, and cooperate.
- Do not offer cash to the officer in order
to pay your fine as all fines need to be paid by check in the mail or
in traffic court.
- They will only ask you to get out of
the car if they think you have been drinking alcohol or if they see
anything suspicious. in your car.
What to do if you are in an automobile
accident:
- Although each state varies a little,
it is always best to immediately stop your car and make sure everyone
is okay and safe.
- If it is a serious. accident, you do
not want to move the car so that the police and emergency vehicles can
determine who is at fault and/or take care of the injured.
- If it is a small fender bender it is
probably okay to move your car off to the side of the road so that traffic
may resume.
- Contact the Police by dialing 911.
- They will instruct you to file a police
report and guide you further for local customs.
- Exchange your insurance and contact information
with the other driver.
- Write down their car make, model and
year along with the license plate.
- Be courteous, but not overly talkative
about how the accident happened. Let the police officers and insurance
companies determine such.
